The 2023 Ridge League of Cities Speaker Series continues on April 13, 2023 at the Membership Dinner in Wauchula. The Ridge League is pleased to welcome Dr. Thomas (Tom) Leitzel, President of South Florida State College. Dr. Leitzel has 45 years of experience in acedemic leadership and will celebrate a decade of service as the South Florida State College president later this summer. South Florida State College in Avon Park is similar to our state colleges in Polk, Hillsborough and Pasco counties. Dr. Leitzel will discuss the changing roles of our state colleges and their impacts on our communities.

Originally from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Tom currently serves as President of South Florida State College, located in Avon Park. He has 45 years of progressive academic leadership experience at seven colleges in six states, including:
Pennsylvania College of Technology in Williamsport
Chesapeake College in Maryland
Wytheville Community College in Virginia
Central Piedmont Community College and Pfeiffer University, both located in Charlotte ……
…..and at the Technical College of the Lowcountry located in Beaufort and Hilton Head, South Carolina where he served as President.
He has written numerous articles and consulted on the topic of Education Reform using a curriculum development model that conforms to the concept of Performance Instruction.
Tom holds the following degrees:
– B.A. in Business Administration from Lycoming College (in Pennsylvania)
– M.S. in Higher Education from Temple University
– Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration from Virginia Tech
He has completed additional graduate studies at Bloomsburg University, The Pennsylvania State University, and at the University of Maryland, College Park.
Now in his 10th year, Dr. Leitzel assumed the role of President at South Florida State College on July 1, 2013.
